Winter Hunting Essentials in Outerwear

Gearing up for winter hunting then do not forget to stock up on the outerwear essentials. It is not just about survival but stealth and success too when it comes to a good hunt. And good clothing is essential for getting the hunt right.

Layer it right – Choose a base layer that is made up of moisture wicking fabric which can be a synthetic blend or merino wool. The insulating layer must consist of clothing made up of wool, fleece or synthetic insulation to trap heat. The outer shell must offer protection from external weather elements and hence the clothing must be breathable, windproof, waterproof and durable.

Special materials – Avoid cotton as it holds moisture making it colder for the body. Brands are using outerwear fabrics with water-repellent coating, insulation and laminated shells. Make sure the clothing is well-fitting and allow room for easy movement. Overly loose clothing lets the heat escape and tight fitted clothing can restrict movement.

Tailored outerwear – Activities that require the hunters to be in seating or standing positions for a longer time, they might want to prioritize wind protection and high insulation. Those who are actively moving through the hunting terrain, they might need more lighter and breathable outerwear but that which can still block wind and moisture.

Final Tips

Choose outerwear based on wind, snow, moisture and expected weather conditions and based on the physical activity i.e. still vs moving.

Do not rely on the jacket alone for wind protection or for warmth. Choose a layering system that can be easily worn or removed as per convenience.

Prioritize a quiet fabric for hunting in stealth mode.

Check for features such as harness pass-throughs to keep binocs and packs handy; adjustable hoods and waists, plenty of pockets and articulated elbows.

Last but not the least, do not go for high-end hunting outerwear for occasional hunting. Stick to basics and balance cost versus how often the clothing is used.
